Tunes of Glory,
Tartan Day in New York City, April 6, 2002

Sir Sean
Connery
On
April 6th, 2002, the largest contingent of bagpipers in the United States
converged on Downtown Manhattan and marched uptown to Central Park on behalf of
Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Gilda's Club. Considering the events of 9/11,
there was an unprecedented show of patriotism. The parade of 7,000 plus pipers
took place on Tartan Day amidst brief snow flurries and brisk temperatures that
challenged even the most stalwart kilt wearer.
The
procession was led off by a very well known Scotsman, Sir Sean Connery, walking
alongside the new Mayor of New York City, The Honorable Michael Bloomberg.
Following the mayoral gathering, a group of double-decker buses adorned in
portraits of Scotland led close behind with our own 'Doc' Burnham on board. The
Clan Gordon Highlanders led off the Second Division marching abreast of the City
of Long Beach Highlanders. Visiting bands came from all over the country and
around the world, including the UK, Scotland, Canada, Alaska, Wisconsin,
California and Indiana to name but a few.
The "Tunes of Glory" that were selected for
the parade included three sets:
- Scotland the Brave/The
Minstrel Boy
- The Green Hills of
Tyrol/The Battle's O'er/Lochanside
- Farewell to the
Creeks/The Cock of the North
The parade came to a conclusion in Central
Park near Tavern on the Green. It was an experience that will not soon be
forgotten by those who attended and the many friendships formed will last
forever. Here now, our photographic essay courtesy of our band photographer,
Andrew McInnes.
